Gynecomastia is the medical term for an excess of breast tissue in men and boys. It can be temporary, in babies and adolescents, or develop due to the use of certain medications, heredity, age, excess weight, or various physical conditions. Gynecomastia can be resolved with male breast reduction surgery or liposuction.

The ideal male body

A Comprehensive, Personalized Approach

The ideal male body type is one that is muscular and broad shouldered. However, some men cannot achieve a trim, athletic appearance, as they suffer from a condition called gynecomastia, or the enlargement of breast tissue in males. This can occur during an infant's development in the womb due to a transfer of estrogen from the mother. It may also occur in adolescence or later in life from a decrease in testosterone.

An excess of breast tissue can also occur as a side effect of medication or from a disease or metabolic disorder. It can be distressing and embarrassing to have so much breast tissue that your upper chest appears more However, a male breast reduction can remove this excess breast tissue and restore a masculine contour to the chest. Dr. Casper understands the sensitivity of this condition and the embarrassment that comes with it and so strives to deliver the best gynecomastia treatment available, appropriate to what is needed by the individual patient. The medications that can lead to gynecomastia include:

  • Anabolic steroids, androgens
  • Anti-anxiety medications
  • Antidepressants
  • Ulcer medications
  • Cancer treatment drugs (chemo)
  • Heart medications
  • Some gastric medications
  • AIDS medications
  • Hair growth medications (Propecia, finasteride)
  • Antibiotics

Should I undergo male breast reduction surgery?

The ideal candidate for a gynecomastia surgery is a male individual who is unhappy with the excess breast tissue in the chest. You should be in good overall health and fully understand the expected outcome and procedure.

The condition may or may not be related to another medical condition. However, to ensure your gynecomastia is not related to a serious medical issue, consult with your general physician to determine the underlying cause before receiving gynecomastia treatment from our acclaimed, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Casper.

How do you remove male breasts?

The procedure can be performed under general anesthesia or sedation with local anesthesia. The male breast reduction surgery often takes about an hour and a half but can take longer depending upon the complexity of the procedure. The techniques involved in correcting your gynecomastia will be affected by your individual needs.

Liposuction or surgical removal?

If excess fat is causing the problem tumescent liposuction is performed. A small hollow tube (called a cannula) is inserted directly into the targeted area and the excess fat is removed. If it is excess breast tissue rather than fat that is the primary cause, the glandular tissue will be surgically excised. For excess breast tissue, incisions are made under the areola. Our board-certified plastic surgeon removes the excess breast tissue, fat and skin by working through the incision.

What is the recovery time after male breast reduction?

After male breast reduction you are encouraged to avoid strenuous activities for at least three weeks so that your body can heal properly. Drink plenty of fluids and wear a compression garment around the chest to help your skin to conform to your trimmer chest contour. Swelling and bruising are normal and should fade gradually over the next two to three weeks. You can return to your daily workouts after about six to ten weeks; however, chest exercises should be avoided for three months.

What are the benefits of male breast reduction surgery?

Men who undergo this surgery can expect to experience the following benefits:

  • More confidence in body image
  • Able to wear form-fitting shirts with confidence
  • More inspired to engage in social activities
  • No more embarrassment about excess breast tissue
  • No more teasing or comments about “man boobs”
  • Free to go shirtless at pool or beach
