Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)
The ideal male body type is one that is muscular and broad shouldered. However, some men cannot achieve this body through dieting and exercise alone - they suffer from a condition called gynecomastia, or the enlargement of breast tissue in males. This can occur during an infant's development in the womb due to a transfer of estrogen from the mother. It may also occur in adolescence or later in life from a decrease in testosterone. It can also occur as a side effect of medication or from a disease or metabolic disorder. This can be a very distressing condition. However, a male breast reduction can remove this excess breast tissue and restore a masculine contour to the chest. Dr. Casper understands the sensitivity of this condition and the embarrassment that comes with it and so strives to deliver the best gynecomastia treatment Los Angeles & Pasadena have available.
The ideal candidate for a gynecomastia surgery is a male individual who is unhappy with his excess breast tissue in the chest. He should be in good overall health and fully understand the expected outcome and procedure. Often, the cause of gynecomastia is not related to another medical condition. However, to ensure your gynecomastia is not related to a serious medical issue, consult with your general physician to determine the underlying cause before receiving gynecomastia treatment from Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Casper.
The procedure can be performed under general anesthesia or sedation with local anesthesia. The male breast reduction surgery often takes about an hour and a half but can take longer depending upon the complexity of the procedure. The techniques your surgeon will use to correct your gynecomastia will be affected by your individual needs.
If excess fat is causing the problem, Smart Lipo, or Tumescent Liposuction will be used. A small hollow tube (called a cannula) is inserted directly into the targeted area and the fat is removed. If it is excess breast tissue and not fat that is the primary cause, this will be surgically excised. For excess breast tissue, incisions are made under the areola. The surgeon removes the excess breast tissue, fat and skin by working through the incision. During your consultation you and Dr. Daniel Casper will discuss all of the options available to you in order to create a surgical plan designed to deliver the most effective gynecomastia treatment Los Angeles has available.
After the male breast reduction procedure, patients are encouraged to avoid strenuous activities for at least three weeks. This will promote proper healing. Drink plenty of fluids and wear a compression garment around the chest to encourage skin to conform to the new chest contour. Swelling and bruising are normal and should fade gradually over the next two to three weeks. Patients can return to daily workouts after about six to ten weeks; however, chest exercises should be avoided until three months have passed.
