The Facelift Procedure

Medically known as a rhytidectomy, facelift surgery can be a good option for patients who are showing prominent signs of aging in the face. Those who may be showing signs of age to a lesser degree may benefit from a less invasive procedure, such as cosmetic injectable treatment. There are a number of different facelift surgery techniques, and Dr. Casper will be happy to discuss all of your options with you at your initial consultation. The traditional facelift procedure typically begins with incisions created above the hairline at the temples. These incisions will extend either to the front of the ear or behind the earlobe by way of the front cartilage. Then, Dr. Casper will separate fat and skin from the underlying facial muscles. These muscles will then be tightened, and excess skin will be removed. Dr. Casper will also tighten the remaining skin for a smoother, more youthful appearance, and close the incisions.

Facelift surgery typically takes about two to three hours to complete under general anesthesia. This procedure can be completed as an outpatient.

Facelift Recovery

Some bruising and swelling can be expected after facelift surgery. Any pain and discomfort after during the recovery process can be alleviated with medication. You will need to keep your head elevated for a few days, and bandages will need to remain in place during this time in order to facilitate the healing process. Any residual scarring from facelift surgery is typically well-hidden and virtually invisible behind the hairline or the natural creases of the ears. You should avoid participating in strenuous activities for about two weeks after a facelift procedure. Most patients can resume normal daily routines after about ten days.
